Amazon import charges in the Netherlands: who pays and how much
Dutch Amazon shoppers mostly buy EU-fulfilled stock, which never generates customs charges — a point worth stating because it is where most 'why was I charged' confusion starts. The charges belong exclusively to marketplace imports shipped from outside the EU, and for those the 2026 framework applies in full: VAT at 21% at checkout, €3 of duty per distinct HS6 tariff line at import.
Such imports usually arrive with a courier rather than PostNL, and courier clearance fees occupy the €5–€20 range — frequently the biggest single surcharge on a cheap order. The duty itself stays modest as long as the basket stays narrow: every extra product category is another tariff line and another €3.

Worked example
Shipped from outside the EU: €34.95 earphones plus a €8.75 plastic kitchen item, free carriage (€0) — €43.70 of goods in two HS6 headings. Duty: 2 lines × €3 = €6. The €9.18 of VAT at 21% was part of the checkout charge.
At the door the courier collects €11–€26 — €6 of duty plus clearance handling in the €5–€20 band — putting the order's genuine cost at €63.88–€78.88.

- The flat duty then does not exist for that parcel. It clears under an H7 declaration at the standard EU tariff for its HS code, pays Dutch import VAT at 21% on goods plus shipping plus duty at the border, and carries the carrier's advancement fee — €0–€8 postal or €5–€20 express. The stack usually totals more than the IOSS route, particularly for tariff-heavy goods.
- Can I avoid customs charges by choosing different Amazon listings?
- Often, yes — legitimately. Filter for offers fulfilled from EU stock: those involve no import, no duty and no courier clearance fee, because the goods already circulate inside the customs union. Direct-import listings can still win on price for niche items, but compare their checkout price plus €3 per tariff line plus €5–€20 handling against the EU-stocked alternative before deciding.
- Do the 2026 rules change Amazon orders above €150 to the Netherlands?
- No. Consignments over €150 in intrinsic value were outside de-minimis before the reform and remain on the classic import regime: per-product EU tariff rates, Dutch import VAT at 21% with transport in the customs value, and carrier clearance fees. The July 2026 changes — including the €3-per-line duty — apply solely to low-value consignments at or under €150.
