AliExpress import fees in Germany: what you pay since July 2026
AliExpress is the marketplace where the IOSS toggle genuinely matters. Marketplace orders normally check out with German VAT at 19% collected via IOSS, and since 1 July 2026 those consignments owe a flat €3 customs duty per distinct HS6 tariff line. But direct-seller storefronts on the platform sometimes ship outside IOSS — and then a completely different calculation applies.
There is an electronics twist that softens the non-IOSS case: many AliExpress staples — earphones, phone accessories — sit in HS headings with a zero-percent tariff. A non-IOSS gadget parcel may owe no duty at all, just import VAT and the carrier's fee, while the same goods on the IOSS path pay the flat per-line duty. Deutsche Post/DHL presents either kind to Zoll and collects what remains.
Our engine's worked example below takes the ordinary IOSS route.

Worked example
Consider €18.40 earphones plus two phone-accessory items at €2.99 each, shipping free: €24.38 of goods, €0 carriage. The accessory pair shares one HS6 code and the earphones take another, giving 2 tariff lines — duty of 2 × €3 = €6. German VAT of €4.63 at 19% was part of the checkout total.
The amount outstanding at the door is €6–€14, combining €6 of duty with a possible Deutsche Post handling charge inside €0–€8; the complete landed cost is €35.01–€43.01.

Frequently asked questions
- Do AliExpress orders to Germany get customs charges now?
- Yes — since 1 July 2026 no low-value parcel is exempt. Standard marketplace orders check out with German VAT at 19% via IOSS and then owe €3 of customs duty per distinct HS6 tariff line, collected by Deutsche Post/DHL. Orders from direct sellers without IOSS instead pay the normal EU tariff for their HS code plus import VAT at the border.
- Is the €3-style duty on AliExpress per order or per product type?
- Per product type — precisely, per distinct HS6 tariff line in the consignment. Three identical USB cables share a line and owe one €3; a cable, a smartwatch and a lamp are three lines at €3 apiece. The duty never scales with parcel count or unit count, only with how many different tariff headings your basket touches.
- What if my AliExpress seller doesn't use IOSS?
- The flat duty disappears and the parcel clears under an H7 declaration at the standard EU tariff rate for its HS code. For much of AliExpress's core catalogue — earphones, phone accessories — that rate is zero percent, so the real costs become German import VAT at 19% on goods plus shipping plus duty, and the carrier's advancement fee, typically €0–€8 by post.
- Can a non-IOSS AliExpress parcel be cheaper than an IOSS one?
- For zero-tariff electronics, the duty component can be: a non-IOSS earphone parcel owes no tariff, while the same goods via IOSS owe the flat €3 per line. But the comparison rarely ends there — non-IOSS parcels pay import VAT at 19% at the border and near-certain carrier advancement fees (€0–€8 postal), and clearance is slower. Run both paths in the calculator before concluding.
- How long does the flat duty on AliExpress parcels apply?
- Until July 1, 2028. It is a transitional bridge while the EU Customs Data Hub is built; afterwards every low-value import pays its product's normal tariff rate. For zero-rated electronics that future looks mild, but for clothing, shoes and household goods the post-transition rates typically exceed today's flat duty — so category mix will matter even more from 2028.
