AliExpress import fees in Spain: what the courier collects

Spanish AliExpress orders increasingly arrive by express courier — the platform's premium shipping options route through carriers like DHL rather than Correos. The customs rules are identical either way: since 1 July 2026, an IOSS marketplace order owes €3 per distinct HS6 tariff line, with Spanish VAT at 21% already collected at checkout. What changes with a courier is the handling: express clearance fees run €5–€20 against the postal €0–€8.

The upside of paying for courier shipping is speed through aduanas — express operators clear IOSS parcels almost immediately, avoiding the queues that slow postal imports. The duty itself cannot be shipped around: it follows the tariff-line count of the basket wherever the parcel travels.

The worked example below uses exactly this express setup, so its handling line shows the courier band rather than the postal one.

Worked example

A €6.75 phone accessory and a €19.90 wrist-watch, express-shipped at no charge (€0): €26.65 of goods across two HS6 headings. That makes 2 tariff lines and a duty of 2 × €3 = €6; the €5.60 of VAT at 21% was in the checkout price.

The courier settles clearance and requests €11–€26 — €6 of duty plus its handling within €5–€20, the express band — for a delivered total of €43.25–€58.25.

Frequently asked questions

¿Cuánto se paga de aduana por un pedido de AliExpress?
On a normal Spanish marketplace order the answer is €3 multiplied by the number of distinct HS6 tariff lines in the parcel — VAT at 21% was already collected at checkout via IOSS. One product category means one €3; a gadget-and-watch combination means two. The carrier collects the duty at delivery, plus its own handling fee: €0–€8 postal or €5–€20 express.
Does express shipping change the customs duty on AliExpress orders?
No — duty is set by the basket, not the transport. An IOSS consignment owes €3 per distinct HS6 tariff line whether it flies with a courier or rides with Correos. What shipping choice changes is clearance speed and the handling fee: express operators typically charge €5–€20 against the postal €0–€8, in exchange for far faster processing through Spanish customs.
What happens if an AliExpress seller ships to Spain without IOSS?
The parcel exits the flat-duty system entirely. It clears under an H7 declaration at the standard EU tariff for its HS code — zero percent for many AliExpress electronics — and pays Spanish import VAT at 21% on goods plus shipping plus duty, with the carrier's advancement fee on top. Expect slower clearance through aduanas than an IOSS parcel would see.
Why is the duty per tariff line and not per AliExpress parcel?
Because the regulation attaches the €3 to each distinct HS6 tariff line in a consignment — the EU wanted duty income to reflect what is imported, not how it is boxed. For shoppers the practical rule: multiples of one product share a single line and a single €3; every additional product category adds a line and another €3. Repackaging or splitting parcels doesn't alter the count.
Do AliExpress orders over €150 to Spain pay the flat duty?
No. Consignments above €150 in intrinsic goods value were never inside de-minimis, and the July 2026 reform left them untouched: they pay the EU's ordinary tariff rate per product, Spanish import VAT at 21% with transport in the customs value, and the carrier's clearance fee. The €3-per-line arrangement exists only at or below €150 with an IOSS seller.
