How much customs do AliExpress parcels pay in Italy?

Italy treats AliExpress traffic like all direct-from-China flows: closely. Since 1 July 2026 an IOSS marketplace order carries a flat €3 customs duty per distinct HS6 tariff line — Italian VAT at 22% having been collected at checkout — and Agenzia delle Dogane's screens watch declared values on top. Poste Italiane brings the parcel and the bill.

AliExpress baskets are electronics-led, which cuts two ways in Italy. On the IOSS path, gadget categories multiply tariff lines quickly: earphones, a lamp and a cable are three lines. On the rarer non-IOSS path, the same gadgets often benefit from zero-percent tariff headings, shifting the cost burden to import VAT and the carrier fee instead.

Here is the standard IOSS case, computed on a real basket of audio gear and lighting — two headings, two duties, one modest doorstep bill.

Worked example

Earphones at €14.20 plus an LED light at €9.85, shipped for €2.20: €24.05 of goods, €2.20 postage. Audio gear and luminaires are separate HS6 headings — 2 tariff lines — so the duty comes to 2 × €3 = €6. Checkout already included €5.78 of VAT at 22%.

Poste Italiane's request on delivery is €6–€14, the duty together with handling somewhere in €0–€8; the order's honest total is €38.03–€46.03.

Frequently asked questions

Si paga la dogana per i pacchi AliExpress in Italia?
Yes — universally since 1 July 2026. A marketplace order with IOSS checkout owes €3 of customs duty per distinct HS6 tariff line in the parcel; Italian VAT at 22% was already charged when you ordered. Poste Italiane collects the duty on delivery, sometimes with a handling charge in the €0–€8 range. Non-IOSS orders follow the standard tariff route instead.
Is the AliExpress duty in Italy a flat €3 per package?
No — that widespread summary is wrong. The duty is €3 per distinct HS6 tariff line within the package: a parcel of one product type owes exactly one €3 regardless of quantity, and each further product category adds another. An electronics order mixing earphones, a charger and a smart bulb owes three times what a single-category order owes.
What does a non-IOSS AliExpress order pay at Italian customs?
Standard treatment: the EU tariff rate for the HS code via an H7 declaration — often zero percent for phone accessories and earphones — plus Italian import VAT at 22% computed on goods plus shipping plus any duty, plus the carrier's advancement fee, typically €0–€8 for postal arrivals. The flat per-line duty never applies without IOSS; the two systems are mutually exclusive.
Can Italian customs recalculate the value of an AliExpress parcel?
Yes, if the declared value looks understated. Agenzia delle Dogane is aggressive about undervaluation on low-value imports and can hold a parcel, demand evidence such as the order receipt, and reassess charges on a corrected value. Keeping your AliExpress order confirmation accessible shortens such disputes — the platform's genuine prices are usually accepted once documented.
When does the flat duty on AliExpress parcels end?
On July 1, 2028, when the transition gives way to the EU's normal per-product tariff schedule administered through the Customs Data Hub. For zero-tariff electronics headings the change may be gentle; for most other consumer goods the scheduled rates exceed today's flat duty. The separately proposed EU handling fee on small parcels remains just that — proposed, with no amount or date fixed.
