How much are customs fees on Etsy orders to Spain?

Ordering from Etsy to Spain means your parcel's customs treatment depends on a question many buyers never ask: where does the shop actually dispatch from? Spanish and other EU sellers ship free of any customs process. Everyone else — the ceramicist in England, the jeweller in Türkiye — sends you an import, and imports have all been dutiable since 1 July 2026.

For orders up to €150, Etsy's marketplace VAT collection means the 21% Spanish VAT is already inside your checkout total, leaving customs to add a flat €3 per distinct HS6 tariff line. That per-line detail rewards focused orders: several pieces of the same product type share one line and one €3, while an eclectic mix multiplies the duty.

Correos handles most postal imports, and its slow-clearance reputation applies mainly to parcels lacking prepaid VAT — another reason the Etsy checkout route usually beats a seller improvising their own shipping paperwork.

Worked example

This basket shows why line-counting beats item-counting: two handmade-style rings at €16.75 each, shipped together for €4.95 — €33.50 in goods. Both rings classify under the same imitation-jewellery HS6 heading, so despite being two items the parcel carries 1 tariff line and owes just 1 × €3 = €3 in duty. Etsy collected €8.07 of VAT at checkout; Correos handling typically adds €0–€8. Door total: €49.52–€57.52, of which €3–€11 lands after checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay customs in Spain for a handmade Etsy order?
If it ships from outside the EU, yes. Handmade goods classify under the same HS headings as manufactured ones, so an order up to €150 pays €3 per distinct tariff line, with Spanish VAT at 21% collected by Etsy when you pay. Orders dispatched from EU-based Etsy sellers involve no customs at all.
If I buy two identical items on Etsy, do I pay the duty twice?
No. Duty on the low-value IOSS path is charged per distinct HS6 tariff line, and identical items share a line. Two rings of the same type: one line, one €3. It is mixing categories that multiplies duty — a ring plus a ceramic mug is two lines and 2 × €3. The charge is never per item and never per parcel.
Why is my Etsy parcel stuck at aduanas in Spain?
Delays usually mean the parcel arrived without usable IOSS or declaration data, so it needs manual clearance: tariff assessment by HS code, import VAT at 21% on goods plus shipping plus duty, and payment of Correos' advancement fee — typically €0–€8 — before release. Contacting the seller for the invoice and responding quickly to Correos notifications shortens the wait.
Does Etsy charge Spanish VAT at checkout or does Correos bill me?
On imports up to €150, Etsy adds VAT at 21% to your checkout total and remits it, so Correos should only collect the per-line duty and any handling fee on delivery. If a parcel loses its IOSS data in transit and VAT is demanded again, pay to release the parcel and claim the double charge back through Etsy with your receipt.
Are Etsy orders above €150 treated differently in Spain?
Yes — above €150 intrinsic value the flat per-line duty never applies. The parcel pays the normal EU tariff rate for its HS heading, import VAT at 21% on goods plus shipping plus duty, and carrier clearance charges, typically €0–€8 postal or €5–€20 express. This band worked the same way before July 2026; the reform did not touch it.
